My Martial Arts Journey
I was born in 1967, and my journey in martial arts began in 1980 with traditional South Indian martial arts such as Silambam and Kusthi.
In 1984, I started learning Shotokan Karate, and by 1986, I transitioned to Isshinryu Karate.
- 1991 – Achieved 1st Dan Black Belt in Isshinryu Karate
- 1996 – Promoted to 3rd Dan
- 2008 – Achieved 6th Dan in Isshinryu Karate
Along the way, I also pursued other disciplines:
- 2006 – Awarded 5th Dan in Gōjū-ryū Karate, Japan
- 2008 – Achieved 1st Dan in Taekwondo, Kukkiwon, Korea
- 2016 – Achieved 1st Dan in Jujutsu
Recognition of my dedication:
- 2016 – Promoted to 7th Dan Black Belt by the Karate Association of India (KAI)
- 2024 – Honored with 8th Dan Black Belt by the Karate India Organisation (KIO)
As of today, I have completed over 40 years in the field of martial arts.
I am deeply grateful for this journey, and at this moment, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all my teachers, instructors, and everyone who has guided and supported me along the way.

The Academy of Universal Global Peace, accredited by American University has conferred a Honorary Doctorate for 30+ years of Karate experience and 20+ years of Social Service.

“RtnShihanA R Sundar has been conferred the doctrate title based on many activities he has been doing for the past several decades. He has trained several thousands of people in Martial Arts/Self Defense over these years and he has also actively participated in various social welfare activities. Rotary ERA with which Shihan AR Sundar is a part of has worked extensively to help the needy during the dec 2015 chennai floods. He has conducted several self defense classes for media including popular TV, Radio and News Paper companies and MNC Banks through which many people have been benefitted, this includes many women employees who have been trained to face daring situations in real life.”

He has also been conferred with the title RENSHI-GO which means Expert in Martial Arts. He is the first person in India to be conferred with the RENSHI-GO title by Isshin-Ryu Brotherhood, USA.
Shihan Dr. AR. Sundar is the Vice President of Isshin-Ryu Style Karate Institutions recognized by AIKF (All India Karate-Do Federation), India and the President of the same for South India chapter. AIKF is recognized by Govt. of India & Indian Olympic Association.
Rtn, Shihan.DR, A.R.Sundar was born in 18th of August 1967. His successful association with KARATE began in his 17th year when he started to learn the Isshinryu style under one of the Instructors of the Exerkai Isshinryu Karate. Renshi’s teaching experience began in the year 1988 when he reached his Brown Belt in the Shotokan Style of Karate under Renshi Dayalan that continues till date.
Before learning Karate he got trained under Master Palani in the typically South Indian Martial Arts like Silambam etc. He also learnt Taekwon-Do from Sensei Selvakumar , Aikido and Jujutsu from martial arts expert Sensei Murthy , Judo from Sensai Ellamparuthi
